The second dredging campaign in the basin began in March and will last from 2 to 3 months depending on the weather conditions.
The Fernão de Magalhães dredger is now operating in the future basin, cutting and fragmenting hard soils which are sucked and discharged into areas to become future platforms. The rate of work is impressive as 60,000 m3 of sand are extracted every day to which twice this volume in water is to be added. For Calais Port 2015, 4.3 millions of materials will have been dredged at the end of the construction work.
These spectacular sea works by the means employed will be also impressive as a result : a basin with a depth of 9.5 up to 11.5 m and more visibly 35 ha reclaimed from the sea in addition to the first 10 hectares already gained during the previous dredging and backfilling campaign.
Within a few months, the artificial basin created by the junction between the main breakwater and the Eastern inner embankment will be completely filled up.
