The required administrative authorizations were obtained and the formulation studies for the manufacture of the asphalt mixes carried out.
A mobile power plant of MALET Company, a member of the Design & Construction JV and subsidiary of the Spie-Batignolles group, was implemented in situ since mid-May. It will make it possible to produce 20% recycled asphalt and will produce for the site as soon as the first formulation tests are validated.
What we commonly refer to as “asphalt” is actually a material made of pebbles coated with bitumen. It consists of aggregates, sand and filler (part of sand extremely thin), heated to 170-180°C in a Mixer Dryer Drum (MDR) and then mixed with bitumen ; the product leaves the asphalt plant at a temperature of approximately 130-140°C.
Depending on the proportions of the ingredients and their nature, the asphalt mix has very different behavioral characteristics which makes it suitable for a wide range of uses (foundation, wearing course, thin, draining…).
More than 300,000 tons of asphalt will be applied to the roads and platforms of Calais Port 2015 site. It should be noted that the main aggregates come from the quarries of the Marquise basin.
